What happens behind the scenes of a TED talk?
Back in 2018, I had the opportunity to help to organize a TEDx talk. Indeed, I was a volunteer for TEDxAmsterdam Women.
The story about TEDx
To give you a little bit of context, TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less).
TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment, and Design converged. Today conferences all over the world are organized about a vast range of topics take place — from science to business to global issues.
What about TEDxAmsterdam Women?
TEDxAmsterdam Women is an independently run TEDx chapter.
It is organized after TEDxWomen, a global conference that provides a stage for women to inspire that specifically focuses on the unique way in which women contribute to global change and thus helps to reshape the future.
TEDxAmsterdam Women provides a platform for women (and men) to share their “ideas worth spreading” as a means to foster innovation and transformation, inspired and led by women, worldwide in Amsterdam.
My role as a social influencer for Facebook.
Within the organization, my role was to be the social influencer for Facebook.
What does it mean? In short, I had to ensure the followers are ever inspired by the #TEDxAmsterdamWomen message via posts and stories on Facebook.
I was also responsible for the real-time social media coverage of the live event. Indeed, at a TEDx event, in plus of having physical attendees, there are also attendees via social media as well.
What happens during a TEDx Talk?
Before the event, I was assigned to manage our Facebook page, which means I was responsible for the live feed as well as posting information about the speakers as well as respond to questions.
I also had to promote the hashtags that are used across other channels besides Facebook.
We also curated relevant and essential content about every speaker such as articles and blogs, watches every YouTube video and collected all the speaker’s social media handles and put it in a shared google spreadsheet to able to share it live during the broadcast.
And voilà! Being part of the TEDxAmsterdam women was truly a memorable and positive experience and it was an honor being part of an organization that helps women (and men) to share their “ideas worth spreading”!
